Blistering is caused by the partial loss of adhesion of the coating. The gas or liquid pressure in the bubbles makes the substrate or the underlying coating bulge, causing the coating to appear round and convex. This deformation will disappear or exist for a long time during the film drying process. Therefore, foaming must meet two conditions: First, the coating has water permeability and air permeability, and all coatings are no exception, but with the different types of coatings, the water permeability is also different. Secondly, there are adhesion defects between the coating and the substrate, such as poor wettability, missing coating, dust, oil, and soluble substances.

In a high-humidity environment or when in contact with water, water or water vapor condenses in these places through the film. When the temperature rises, they expand to produce stress, which causes adhesion and destruction of nearby coatings, leading to the generation and expansion of bubbles.
